Gamescom 2013: Microsoft

Gamescom takes place annually in Cologne, Germany. This means that most of the exciting activities at the world’s largest video game trade show happens when most Americans are asleep. After midnight Pacific Standard Time, Microsoft held their press only (non-public) gathering where they made some new announcements for their next-generation console, the Xbox One. Since then the news has been trickling down slowly over the course of Tuesday morning. The following is a brief list of what we know so far.

  • A new video for Ryse: Son of Rome was shown revealing coop multi-player battle arenas. The combat looks faster and more fluid than previously shown, and the button prompts for executions, which had people mistakenly believe the game was all QTE combat, have been removed.
  • All Xbox One pre-orders in Europe get FIFA 14 bundled with the console, no extra charge. What about North America?
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts multi-player will run on dedicated servers for Xbox One.
  • Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare and Peggle 2 will arrive first on Xbox One.
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts Xbox One bundles for Europe were announced, complete with exclusive content which will arrive first on the Microsoft platform. Still no word on North American bundles.
  • Mojang, developer of Minecraft, will release their new side-scrolling platformer, Cobalt, for Xbox One and 360.
  • A new multi-player focused Fable, called Fable Legends, was announced showing players can choose to be the hero or villain.
  • Independent Developers @ Xbox is a new program to help indie devs to put content on the Xbox One. “Qualified” developers will get two Xbox One dev kits for free, access to toolsets, cloud services, achievements, and Kinect and Smartglass functionality for their games.
  • Killer Instinct will come out at two main price points: $20 will get you all eight characters (6 which will be available at launch) and some unlocks. $40 will get you all the characters and character skins, and an emulated version of the original Killer Instinct. A season 2 was announced to come out in a year or so and will be fully compatible with season 1. Each character purchase for the free-to-play model will cost $5, but purchasing all characters will not cost more than the $20 price point.
  • Tom Clancy’s The Division will offer Xbox One owners some undisclosed exclusive content. The game is scheduled to release late 2014.
